
A rotten sill plate is a common occurrence in old houses—and a big problem. Often installed too close to the ground or otherwise exposed to water or insect infestation, sills can—and do—literally rot out from under the building. The good news is that many of them can be replaced using common tools, common materials, and common sense.
SAVE; Rot is the biggest enemy of a wood structure's integrity. When wood sill plates or studs rot, the strength of your home's structure is compromised. Leave the jack and the base of the column on the floor just next to the bottom sill plate you need replaced.
